8gb is around the sweetspot 4 is fine for a light user 16gb for video editing cad work ect..

Gaming I would say 8GB max, making gaming videos and editing I would say 16GB maybe 32GB if it a regular thing. 3D Rendering and compiling I would say as much as your motherboard can take.

Please don't post again unless you tell us the rest of your PC set up, for all I know you could be running an old dual core 1GHz Athlon and on-board graphics.
