How many ports should the rear IO of a motherboard have?

I am relatively new to building PCs and looking to build a system, how many USB ports should the rear IO for a motherboard have? Obviously one for a mouse and one for a keyboard, how many more do I need?

Normally there are more than anyone needs so its not really an issue imo.

Look at how many USB devices you'll be using and purchase based off that. Also count front-facing USB ports that appear on your Computer Case, generally most have at least two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 with newer cases.

There are adapters to split single usb ports to 4 or 7 in example. There is no general rule how many usb ports a motherboard should have. But if you ask me, at least 4 ports on back and 2 on front are the minimum today. Mine have much more... But who cares.
