That depends a lot on which i3 and which i5 processors you are talking about. With the current generation 8000-series processors, core counts were increased at all levels. So for example, an i3-8100 desktop processor actually performs nearly identical to an i5-7500 from the previous generation.

i3/i5/i7/i9 are just rough branding from Intel. Depending on the generation, series, and use they differ greatly.
