Hello,

We are interested in purchasing a NAS storage such as this one here:

Synology America Disk Station 4-Bay Network Attached Storage (DS415+)

Here are the specs from the website

CPU: Intel Atom Quad Core 2.4GHz w/ Floating Point & Hardware Encryption Engine
Memory: 2GB DDR3
Drive Bays: 4x 3.5" or 2.5" SATA2 (Hard drive not included)
Supported Clients: Windows XP or later, Mac OS X 10.5 or later, Ubuntu 9.04 or later
Power Consumption: 46.2W (Access); 17.3W (HDD Hibernation)
Quad Core CPU with AES-NI Hardware Encryption Engine
2 LAN with Failover and Link Aggregation Support

In the red font, notice the maximum capacity of memory is 2 GB. I'm not too familiar with NAS systems. So, just from computer experience in general, 2 GB memory seems quite small, no?

We have a Quad Core Ubuntu 14.04 linux server T730 Powerdge Dell with 6.1 TB of data we want to archive/back up on a NAS. . We just want to copy files over to the NAS server and retrieve when necessary. Possibly setup a weekly automated backup system where we can upload any changes or new data to the NAS without overwriting older data.

Is 2 GB Memory enough for these purposes?

Thank you for your time.

For those purposes, it is fine. What you'd need more memory for is if you're constantly reading/writing data, for example if you have workstations pulling files directly from the NAS, and from what it sounds like that isn't your plan.

Mattio,

Thanks for the feedback.

So yes, we are just uploading files for archiving purposes. Sort of like a dropbox.

Now, another question is incremental backups. Would that resemble constant reading/writing like a normal workstation. For example, we have about 6 TB of data. Say, if we want to upload 2 TB onto the NAS, that would take some time, no? Would having only 2 GB of memory slow the process down or not be sufficient?

Thanks again.
