I am planning to buy a gtx 970 (MSI gaming) But i was wondering if my corsair cx 500m is good enough.

Have you ran into any issues?

Originally I was going to go with a 960 due to my PSU being the same as yours, but now with the 970's "memory issue", open box cards will be really cheap. Plus if your system runs smooth I'll just bite the bullet.

Depends on which CPU you have. If you have a overclocked fx 8350, then 450W is gonna cut it really close and I wouldn't recommend it then, but if you have a energy efficient CPU (TDP under 100W) then a decent 450W PSU like this one is plenty with the GTX 970. I had no issues but I didn't have the 970 for long, I RMA'd it after a week, because of coil whine.

I have a 4690k (not overclocked) so that's 88W. Guess I should be good then!

BTW, what model was your 970?

I had the Asus 970 Strix. Ended up ordering 3 of those in total, but they all whined too much, which is a shame cos now I'm still stuck with a 750Ti (on a 1440p screen) and still no idea what to upgrade it with. I wanted to go for a 960 but its performance is very lackluster and it's also way overpriced here, 230+ euros atm.

My PSU ended up messing up because of this. now I'm in the process of finding a new psu. .. idk what to choose. Can anyone help?

hey pal..can cooler master gx550w 80plus bronze handle gtx 970??

here it is http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/gx-series/gx-550w/

some say that it is probably enough for the card but not that good.. i am not sure if i will face any issues??

and also.. is it tier 3 or 4.. ??

Hi man yes that PSU will handle the card no problem, the 970 overclocked to 1450mhz 106% power with a i7 4770 at 3.9 uses only 260-270watts max thought I would say so you know if you want add me on Skype and if you need to know anything just send a message it's joshua lee griffiths Jones

There seems to be lots of misinformation on this thread. It may be true that the GTX970 uses 145 watts when its not breaking a sweat using low graphical settings but who would want to use low settings with this awesome card? I know for a fact if you play on ULTRA settings with newish games it uses much more than 145 watts. I have a 650 watt PSU an AMD FX8350 and the GTX970 and yet I still exceed 650 watts when I absolutely MAX the graphics in games such as planetside 2, The forest and other high demanding games. This is frustrating since I initially thought 650 watts would suffice and my PC resets when im trying to enjoy max graphics.
Hope this helps

"If" is a strong word that should be used with much care. One can use it for anything to produce any result different than what folks are discussing just so they can be contrary. Irritating but also amusing... :)

Yeah I've seen this mentioned that Nvidia TDP supposedly was typical rating whereas AMD was max. I don't know if that's true. In the real world the power difference between the two (with game not benchmark) seemed to be about the same as their TDP difference.

Sweclockers measure total power consumption with various components but I guess they may not be running FurMark while doing so. Then again Nvidia don't think you should run FurMark and that's not typical use. On the other hand this 8088 MPH demo isn't typical use of the 8088 and CGA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHXx3orN35Y
.. it's still cool though. And possible. And with DX12 and CUDA and such maybe one should also expect the unexpected at least from technology enthusiasts / hackers / game studios who really want to push it :)

Also Nvidia recommends at least a 500 watt PSU for the card and I guess they may have some head-room there for various processors and PSUs which provide less 12 volt too maybe (or if it's just new PSUs and they provide more.)
It likely does NOT include over-clocking or running multiple graphics cards and such. But a stock / normal scenario.

hmmm i have cpu 4590 and my psu is ezcool 450 watt so i want to buy gtx 970 .. can my pc handle it ?btw my graphic card is 750 ti haha

From what I have read and heard, the PSU is directly related to the performance of the GTX 970. Those that get coil whine seem to have not listened to the 500w limit or they have a cheap psu. I remember one person directly testing this theory by getting a higher wattage rosewill capstone and he said it made the coil whine go away. I myself am in shopping for a higher wattage psu just so I can get the gtx 970 without any issues. Just get a tier 1 or tier 2a minimum I'd say.

i have a 450w psu would i be fine running a 970?

MSI recommend 42A on the 12v rail,I would suggest a good Bronze 80 certified psu with 42A minimum on a single 12v rail and an overall wattage of at least 600 watts minimum, remembering that most psu's run most efficiently at 50% power consumption.
