How much ram would i need?

I'm creating a workstation/gaming rig centered around a Xeon E5 2690 V3 (12 core @2.6GHz)

I am mainly going to be editing and rendering 4k videos as well as gaming & recording in 4k.

First i was going to go for 32GB of crucial ballistix ddr4 ram but on my current system i rarely go above 10GB out of 16GB in total. (gaming/recording/rendering in 1080p)

DDR4 is expensive so will the xeon be able to utilize more than 16GB of ram doing 4k stuffs or is more preferable?

With that CPU you need LGA 2011 v3. I would go with 16GB of 2133 speed.

16gb is more than enough for heavy editing the only real purpose for 32gb+ is running a server for multiple virtual workstations or thin clients to hook up too.

Yes, the Xeon can handle 32GB (actually up to 768GB) at a 2133 data rate accoding to Intel

I've already seen the video, but as i've never seen ram usage in sony vegas using 4k footage with this setup i really didn't know how much i'd need. I was on the assumption that xeons could utilize more ram more effectively than standard i7 chips or that not having enough ram for xeons will not be as optimized or even a bottleneck.

16GB is plenty for most video editing software. If you want you can add more later and bring it up to 32GB.
