How noticeable are Aperture Grills?

I'm in the market for a new monitor. Im looking for something in the 17 to 19 inch range. I use my PC just about everything, but I do a lot of gaming and digital art. From what I understand, aperture grill CTRs give better color than shadow masks, though shadow masks are sharper. The only problem is, my dad has an aperture grill CTR and the 2 support shadows bother the piss out of me.

So my question is: How noticeable are the shadows on YOUR monitor? Does anyone have any reccomendations for me? I need something with high Hz as well, slow hz monitors give me headaches. Flat screen is also preference. Looking to spend no more than $400.00

Thanks

well, the grille monitors do have the two lines but as long as you are playing games and have a dark background you hardly notice them. beleive me, i get easily bothered by a alot of things but the two lines are close to nothing. i also thought of getting a shadow mask monitor because i like games but also wanted sharp text. but i think that even though shadow mask monitors generally have sharper text, i haven't found a shadow mask monitor that wasn't just a cheap version of it's grille counterpart.

I use both types, SM and AG and I don't even notice the lines. I used a KDS 17" flat for about a year and I guess I got used to it. Also have a Panasonic SM which has great color, but for all around great performance the AG has been my main monitor. I'm okay with almost any flat screen as long as the refresh rates are decent... 85+

Smoke is an indication you may have exceeded the design limits.

Heh, guess what, I never noticed the lines before until someone pointed them out to me, duh, now I see them all the time and man are they annoying or what? Wierd huh? I think the lines are more noticeable at higher resolutions.

I switched from a Tritnitron to an LG Flatron 'cuz of the lines... I just can't stand 'em!

Plus, the Flatron can do 100Hz @ 1280, which is important to me, except I always work at 85Hz...Go figure.

I wouldn't choose a shadow mask monitor over an AG monitor because of the two lines. On my NEC fe1250+, you can't even see them unless you really search for them and even then you can only barely see them. I have seen cheap monitors that stand out a little more. Just buy a good AG monitor and you'll be happy, sony, samsung, NEC, or viewsonic

You have already stated that they bother you. If you are to be the sole operator, it doesn't matter what anyone says, you are the final arbiter and the only one who needs to be satisfied. I had an AG and the lines didn't bother me at first, but over time I began to notice them more and more, especially when playing a flight sim or doing 3D modeling. Some have said you get used to them, but I grew less and less tolerant, I can no longer overlook them. So, if you go against your initial impression and get an AG, you may be making a costly mistake. Hopefully it won't take you as long to decide, as I am now unable to return mine.

there may be an influx period where they start to bother when they hadn't before. but i propose that is is just as liekly that they will agian begind not to bother youa nd you'll grow accustomed to them. i only notice them when i have a light background but while i'm typing a paper, browsing the net, or playing a game i don't even see them.

The annoyance with the lines may come and go, but I now have both an AG and a SM. The lines never bother me when I am using the SM.

the lines don't bother you when you are using the SM because the AG is the one with the lines.
