How often are GPU fans supposed to run?

Hello,

I have a Radeon r9 380 and I use a program called SpeedFan to check the temperatures of it. When I'm playing light games such as League of Legends the temperature hovers around 55- 60 degrees celsius. I have two questions: one, is that a safe temperature for the GPU? And two, how often should the fans be spinning? When I'm playing light games the fans will turn on, spin for around 5 seconds then turn off. Then after another couple seconds they will turn on again. Is this normal?

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
Have a nice day!

First of all that temperature are perfectly fine. Start worry when they reach 90c range.

And it is quite the norm to see gpu to include "0db" tech right now. Usually gpu with this tech will only start turn on the fan when temperature reach certain degree. Usually in the range of 55c-65c. It is tech pioneered by asus and then followed by other AIB. The advantage was totally silent gpu operation on light gaming usage and might as well prolonged the fan life itself. But user can easily override the setting if they choose to use third party tool such MSI AfterBurner, EVGA Precision etc.

Thank you very much! Do you know anyways to lower GPU temps? I was playing LoL at max settings just now and it reached 91 degrees celsius :??: Kind of scared now, am wanting to play Fallout 4 but afraid that ill blow up my PC.

Use software like MSI after burner to create your own fan curve instead let the fan on auto setting. One thing with AIB fan setting is they usually favor noise over temperature. Means that they will favor low fan speed even on high temperature and will only ramp the fan speed up once the temperature nearing gpu max temperature. In this case it is better to use your own curve instead so the temperature are more under control. But depending on cooler type it can be loud. But AFAIK only blower type cooler are very noisy when the fan speed got crank up to 70% speed or so.

Alright I'll do that, but I ran into a problem, just now my GPU has gone up to temperatures of 90 degrees but the fans aren't spinning at all now.

Nope. But I did try MSI afterburner and applied my own curve. Do I have to keep Afterburner open all the time for this? Whenever I close afterburner my fans stop spinning at my preferred curve. How do I keep the settings?

yes you need to keep MSI AB running all the time for the fan curve to work. when you want to close AB window don't click the close button. that will exit the program. instead click the minimize button so the program will minimize to system tray. AB have a lot of other useful feature as well.

btw just make sure you have the latest driver from AMD. the first ever crimson driver release to the public have known issue about fan speed. in some cases the fan running at full speed all the time and in another case the fan running slow even on high temperature causing overheating problem.

Understood, thank you for all of your help!
