The people who have complained about the Seagate drives above bought Gateway (Acer) and Dell domestic computers. The power supplies in these units are barely up to the task. I think Van N ... hit the nail on the head ... put them in a system with a quality psu and the reliability increases dramatically. I had all kinds of drive failures and PSU failures before I went to an UPS. Now PSU fails don't happen and drives are rare. I have just had a second WD10EALX fail with its electronics stopping working. The drives themselves were perfect. WD replaced the first with a 3TB unit just at the end of its 3 year warranty and the latter is out of warranty, so am getting replacement electronics for it.

I think all these drive makers are about the same. They make cheap drives for the home market. If we want reliability, we must buy upmarket drives, not because they are faster or hold more ... just designed for higher reliability.

I just bought a new Segate Barracuda 1000DM003 Hard Disk SATA and mounted it in a SABRENT EC-7F83 Hard Disk Case to USB. It came right online and backed up my two computers. I have it connected to my LinkSys/Cisco AE2500 Router.
I have 2 Segate Barracuda's ST3401A 40 GB one has a power on reading of 66, 710 Hours and the other 65,354 Hours. That is 7.62 years of run time on the longest one. They are still in daily use. I have a Third one that I stopped using about 6 months ago with XP on it.
My Segate ST9750420AS SATA Drive in the HP 8200 Elite SFF has 17,928 Hours on it. That is 747 days or 2.47 Years on it of Power on so they last well.
I personally will Stay with Segate as they have provided me with the best results for many years. They also have an exceptional SeaTools for Windows.
