How safe is DMZ

So I've been very active recently with port forwarding issues. I have searched far and wide over the internet to try and find the correct ports to play assassin's creed unity coop. I keep failing to open my NAT until I enabled DMZ mode. I'm very tempted to use it but have read many articles warning strongly against it. Just wanted to know what you guys though or if anyone has any other ideas? My firewall is ZoneAlarm free and my antivirus is AVG free.

Thanks

DMZ - Demilitarized Zone.
This is where you put a public facing webserver that exists in your house, but doesn't really connect to the rest of your internal LAN.
A walled off place, more or less safe.

Has nothing to do with playing a game.

I read that it opens all ports on my router for my ip. When I try to open ports, my NAT stays strict, but when I activate DMZ, my NAT opens, so it is helping my game by activating it.

Thanks for the reply on safety, I'm still very split, many like yourself say it's safe but lots of others say it opens up all my ports to potential intruders, 65535 potential intruders.

I have a strict NAT type on assassin's creed unity that's halting online gameplay and the only way I've been able to fix it is by going onto my router settings and enabling DMZ. I'm asking about security because when I enable it, I am told it's a potential security risk due to an open network.
