How stable is the latest version of Skyrim on Steam?

Win7 64, SLI GTX 670's.

First time I played it, I pirated it. Yes, it was stupid and pathetic, but I had just built my PC and wanted to try it (naturally, I blew all my money on the rig). Game was totally unstable and unplayable. I don't know whether it had to do with the game or the fact that it was pirated, but whatever. However, all the issues I had, I Googled, and found that they were usually game-specific, legit or cracked.

Now I want to buy the game, but I don't want to spend money on something I won't be able to use.

So, how stable is the Steam version of Skyrim as of right now?

Secondly, is there any difference in modability between the standalone version and the Steam version?

Finally, is the game even worth getting on the PC? I hear both raves about the game while I hear rants about it being a crappy port and not very good on the PC.

Thanks.

The crappy ports are the ones on console, and skyrim can only be played through steam. There isnt a stand alone version unless you mean the pirated one.

You played on a bootleg version that was probably a beta of the final product. Since you didnt have the original one you couldnt download the latest revisions for the game, and you got stuck with a crappy unfinished game. Hopefully you learned from your mistakes and stopped downloading games ilegally. At the end it all comes to " you get what you paid for", that in your case will be you got crap since you didnt pay anything.

I did delete the game; I forgot to clarify that I had stopped playing after a few hours of dealing with it. My interest in the game has returned, and now I want to buy it and give it another go. No more pirating.

Can you comment on the stability of the game, then?

Yeah, I've being looking for fixes all over. My shadows are extremely low res and all pixelated. I tried the fix where you need to edit your .ini file but nothing changed. I'm about to deleting everyting and reinstall and see what happens :S

I think this was with about 5 flora mods (more branches higher detail leaves more grass higher detail grass higher detail trees higher detail stumps - a lot of room for conflicts I think) 4k textures a better fire mod realistic lighting and shadows
ran like complete and utter arse until I realised I need to increase the amount of ram skyrim uses in the the .ini and then it ran sort of ok
