How to access HDD without booting OS ?

Hey ! I've got a laptop from my friend, there is a set user password which is lost. Since the OS is pretty old i'm planning to reinstall it, but before that i'd like to recover some games and other data from laptop's HDD. How can i do that without connecting HDD to another computer or doc station ? Is there any program which helps to access HDD from flash drive ?

Boot off a Linux CD/USB stick, you can copy the files without removing the hard-drive. You should be able to get the save game data but not the game setup unless you know exactly what files were installed where, the registry settings, and if any dll files were registered.
