Hello,
How do I access the registry files in Windows xp? I have tried entering 'run' 'regedit' and also 'gpedit.msc'.

Solution

Yes, if you have been locked out in the Group Policy Editor...Click Start>Run> and enter gpedit.msc then click Ok.
Maximize the window, it just makes it easier.
Under "User Configuration," expand "Administrative templates"
Click on "System"
Double-click on "Prevent access to registry editing tools"
Set to either "Not configured" or "disabled"Click "apply" then "Ok"

Now go back to Start>Run and enter Regedit, click Ok and see what happens.

Also, to check your status...click...
Thanks. As far as I'm aware i am logged in as administator (I may be wrong).
I think access to my registry has been disabled in the registry - prehaps there is a way to enable this?

Hi thanks. I have tried this, but it won't allow me. I didn't realise that we are generally not logged in as administator therefore administator may have disabled this.

If you are not an administrator you can logon as as admin account to run it. If that won't work, you have group policies set that prevent that from running.

Is this a work computer? If it is, contact your IT people for help.

If it's a home system, find out from whoever disabled this what they did and why.

It will show what you are to the computer, (Admin, user, Etc).
