How to backup with W7

I just began the process of making a disk image using the W7 backup facility. I could see it was going to take a while so I came back about an hour later to find the machine asleep and the backup facility asking for permission to cancel the backup. I was not expecting sleep mode since I figured a backup constituted machine activity. I certainly don't want to sit and watch every backup. What am I doing wrong?

go into your system control panel and set your power setting to always on ect never, never and set them then the pc wont sleep the back up will work if you need just a standard copy of win 7 they are all over the web for free but you need your key to make them work as a back up use the stated above hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. My copy of W7 is legal and I already know how to shut down the power saver function. What I want to be able to do is to schedule regular backups that won't be interfered with by the sleep cycle. Seep is only suppose happens when the computer is inactive (I thought). I can't imagine that backing up the HDD isn't considered activity. Isn't there a setting somewhere that will prevent the computer from entering sleep until the backup is finished?
