Solution

Since this post I've found this really handy tool - BF4 Settings Editor.
Allows you to change ANY settings without having to go into game.
It's the dogs balls tbh!

I don't know about you, but that latest version of this app paired with the latest patch of BF4 screwed up my config file so badly that I had to replace it with BF3's. I uninstalled this software immediately after. Not saying it doesn't work, but be careful and backup your config files before using utilities like this.

The mantle update probably broke it.

Yeah I noticed that last night. Was having problems myself and used the user.cfg fix. Used the settings editor later as I started having issues again, and found that the user.cfg had reverted. Going to uninstall it myself. I've friends having problems both AMD & Nvidia and we all use the Settings editor which was a great tool until now, if that indeed is the problem. I'll post again in a few days and see if anything has changed.

Cheers for the heads up eggsnbakey.

'user.cfg' fix
1. Go into your game directory (dir:\Program files(x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4)
2. If you have a “user.cfg” file, open it in notepad.
3. Delete the command line “UI.DrawEnable 1”
4. Save the file
5. Start the game

A few days later...
As the settings editor is a standalone client I just restored all settings to default, then made my changes manually in-game. Game worked fine. No problems apart from a bug in BF4 that wouldn't allow me to change the keybind on Mouse 4 to toggle 1st gadget. The only way I could get it to bind was by using the settings editor.
