How to clean a copper heatsink???

hi there,

i got a thermaltake v1 copper heatsink with a ton of gunk and finger prints :/

does anyone know the best way to clean this bad boi?

General consensus that using 70%+ isopropranol mixture cleaning solution is a good way to go when cleaning CPU/HSF of thermal paste. I don't know if copper requires a different solution, but have never heard anything to that effect, so I imagine it works there, too.

Ketchup and a toothbrush, put the copper parts in a bowl, let it soak for an hour. Then gently scrub away. Thin stains on the CPU side are common, they are fine left as is.

If the fins are gunky, wash under the sink, use a paintbrush to get in the cracks. Rinse well and blow ALL the water off in all the fin cracks.

hmmmmmm interesting when you say soak for an hour do you mean soak in water? or ketchup? haha

ketchup, just the bottom copper part. And at first I was thinking a watercooled block, so you probably don't even need kechup. Might look into a copper brass cleaner ina bottle, pour etc, give it a try. but clean all the dust and grime off first.

i tried the ketchup just for the hell of it and it worked! just fine so thank you 😀

what does that ketchup have that cleaned church's cooler?

Slightly acidic vinegar in ketchup. Reacts with the copper. It's used because it leaves no oily residue, sticks nicely and is cheap. You can use other things in more severe situations, but kechup is usually fine.
