Hi, so I am going to be upgrading from fx-8320/am3+ board/DDR3 to i5 6500/lga1151/DDR4

I have already backed up my music/pictures/games I care about.

How do I ensure a clean install before installing new components?

Do I need to use a tool to delete drive first turn off pc and then install parts, and then reinstall?

Or do I just turn my pc off, install new parts, boot up and then will I get prompted to reinstall??

After installing your hardware you'll want to boot off your Windows media and do a format and install from there. Keep in mind that an OEM license (which a lot of people on here use) is tied to your hardware. You can try calling in to MS during the process when it gets to the activation stage and see if you can talk them in to letting you activate off the new hardware. Otherwise you may have to buy a new license for the hardware.

Also, if you're installing Windows 7 on to the new Skylake CPU, you'll need to patch the install. Go here,
download the patch and follow the directions in the Readme file. Do this BEFORE you install new hardware, you'll need to do it on a working system to create the new install USB/DVD.

Read this first regarding activation.

Then, worry about a possible reinstall.

So why do I need to do this, and what happens if I do it incorrectly? I am also running windows 10 atm, and I plan to upgrade to windows 10 again if it lets me.

Okay, I was worried that my pc wouldn't boot or somesuch from conflicting drivers or bios conflicts etc? Will that not be an issue?

So I should just install new parts, not even put the windows disc in and see how it is?

With all new parts, there are two considerations, Licensing and Operation.

Licensing
Do what that link says about linking the OS license to a MS account

Operation
Prepare for a whole new OS install. It may or may not be required. But if it is, you will be glad you prepared.
It may or may not boot with the new hardware. There is no 100% either way.

If it does not boot with the new hardware, that is when you boot from the install media you created (prepare, right?), and you do a whole new OS install.
Then drivers
Then all your applications.

This is why you prepare, just in case.

Sweet, my old oem windows 7 disc is install media right... I don't need to make some sort of new ISO?

I thought when people said it wont boot, that it literally wouldn't turn on 😀

Hey! I installed new parts, when I turn pc on cpu fan goes, case fans go, video card lights up and spins, mobo lights up, but I get no video signal after trying on both my monitors using dvi and hdmi. The hdd status on my case glares red each time. Is this because my pc not booting, or do you think I messed something up.. any ideas?

edit: sorry i didnt read your previous reply, ignore me :X

Hey, I have reseated the ram in 1-3 config (was 2-4) and removed reset switch. everything is still lighting up but my pc turns off, then it turns on infinitely unless I unplug it, and even after I unplug it, it restarts for a split second. Have I short circuited my pc....

Also now my keyboard and mouse LEDS wont light up...

I have let it go on a loop for 20 times, still nothing
