Hi All

I have an MSI GE62VR 7RF Apache Pro fitted with a 250Gb Kingston NVMe M.2 SSD. I also have a 500Gb Samsung 970 EVO M,2 SSD, currently in a USB3 enclosure.

I want to clone the internal SSD onto the newer, bigger, faster one, and upgrade the laptop's SSD.
the 25Gb SSD would then go into the enclosure for use as a spare/portable USB drive.

The 250Gb SSD has 4 partitions on it

  • FAT32 Primary
    blank (unassigned?)
    System NTFS
    Another small NTFS

(EDIT: ^Bulletpoint List not working?)

Problems:

1. I can't use Samsung Data Migration because of the Kingston SSD; however:
2. I've proved to myself I can't use the USB enclosure - I believe it is faffing around with sector sizes so when I use for example Macrium to clone it fails with Sector Sizes not matching (or some such error)

So then, how do I do it (not at this point wanting to pay a Service Centre to do it for me :))?

If someone would be good enough to give me a step-by-step idiot's guide, that would be muchly appreciated.

OK thanks.

My internal HDD has data on it, but I guess I can save all that all to another USB drive - does it have to be just empty, or with no partition on it at all?

So having replaced the SSD, I guess that mean diving into the BIOS to make the HDD the boot disk?

First Post so apologies in advance. Searched and found this thread with more or less the same question I have so again apologies for jumping into this thread as opposed to opening a new thread. I have the exact same laptop and I am also considering upgrading from the current 128gb ssd to either 1tb or 2tb ssd. Now the issue is my technical knowledge is rather low but I always give it a go.

I have seen the advise given above to, use a separate hdd where to clone the source of the m.2 ssd, then replace the ssd and clone back the hdd to the new ssd.

I am however then confused with the steps which go on to mention the bios?. What will I need to then do with the bios as I thought its all just about cloning and am good to go?. Or would it be easier for me to just get a Samsung m.2 instead and use there software to migrate the date. Is that easier?. Many thanks and looking forward to your feedback.

Sorry again guys can anyone help?
If the below is unclear, please start your own thread on this:

We're using an Image, not a Clone. Same result though.

---------------------------------
Assuming you have another drive with sufficient free space to hold the entirety of your current drive:

  1. Download and install Macrium Reflect
  2. Run that, and create a Rescue CD or USB (you'll use this later). "Other Tasks"
  3. In the Macrium client, create an Image to some other drive. External USB HDD, maybe. Select all partitions. This results in a file of xxxx.mrimage
  4. When done, power OFF.
  5. Swap the 2 drives
  6. Boot up from the Rescue USB you created earlier.
  7. Recover, and tell it where the Image is that you created in step 3, and which drive to apply it to...the new m.2
  8. Go, and wait until it finishes.
  9. That's all...this should work.
