Hi,

My computer is equipped with a DVI-I dual link port. My monitor is equipped with DVI-D dual link port and a VGA port.
All this while, I have been using a DVI-D cable to connect the computer to the monitor DVI-D port.

Recently, my DVI-D dual link port on the monitor has stopped working. I went to a PC repair shop and was supplied with a VGA cable. A DVI-A adapter was plugged into the computer and then connected to the monitor using the VGA cable.

With the above set up, I could no longer get back my native monitor max resolution of 1920 x 1080 via the windows screen display option. The highest resolution I could select is 1600 x 1200 from the screen display option. If I do that, the screen is very fuzzy. If I set it to a lower resolution, it is quite annoying when I do my photos editing as the pictures appear stretched horizontally and blurr.

Please kindly advise what can I do (recommend what to buy) to get back my native monitor resolution of 1920 x 1080. Many thanks.

Reason is because now using a vga, you only have Analogue graphics and this cannot run at high resolution above 1200 i think. only digital can through either dvi or hdmi. Using adapters with a analogue port will only give max analogue graphics.

Only answer is to replace the monitor with one that has working dvi/hdmi

The reason is likely because of the DVI-A adapter as I'm currently running a Dual Link DVI-I to VGA adapter to my 1920x1080 projector.

VGA can do 1080p, even up to 2048x1536 with a good enough cable and transceiver being decent at both ends with monitor and graphics card.

What is your monitor? Check manual for optimal resolution and Hz using VGA analogue connection and check Hz in windows under monitor is set correctly.

Monitors with multiple signal inputs (digital and analogue) often have a toggle button, this didn't catch you off guard by any chance? Switching to analogue by mistake if monitor doesn't auto detect would make it seem there's something wrong with DVI :)
