I have Sony Camcorder model TRV65 and I would like to record to DVD.
This camcorder model has only component video (three sockets with
yellow, red and white), S-Video out and RFU DC Out. There is no
Firewire option.

My question is, how do create a DVD with this model and how to connect
it to my laptop. My laptop don't have firewire and no s-video in, the
only option left is USB. My laptop has DVD recorder.

Can some one please recommend best way to connect my camcorder to
laptop including software?

Any input in this regard is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

-MM

I use the Hauppage Win-TV PVR-USB2. I paid about $200 at Fry's
electronics.

It is a small external box that plugs in using USB 2.x, has
composite, s-video, and audio jacks. Comes with software for creating
mpeg-2 DVD. I use Arcsoft Showbiz 2.0 for editing, adding
transisitions, titling, and so on. I use Nero 5 for writing DVD's.
I'm using XP Home with SP2 on an HP Pavilion 3.2 gz PC with 160gb hard
drive.

I'm very happy with the results I get.

The BEST thing to do is to get firewire card for your laptop. I got one at
Staples as I was in there anyway. It was a Compaq brand and cost $50.00.
There might be some cheaper elsewhere. Then you would want to digitize the
HI-8 with a digital feed through device of which there are many. I would
however look into getting a digital 8 camcorder that does passthru and stick
with shooting D8 from the beginning. You did not say anything about the
cheapest way to get your video to your laptop so I gave you MY option. I am
sure there must be a less expensive method if you are looking for such a
way.

Regards.

Thanks for your response, but I don't want to record from a TV and was
looking for a cheaper solution. If I spend above $200 then I might
well buy a new camcorder with digital (firewire) features.

Please let me know if anyone else know the cheaper way of connecting.

Appreciate your help.

Not clear what you mean by that. Video is video regardless of its
source ("TV", camcorder, VCR, etc. etc.)

If you are inclined to get a new camera anyway, getting one with a
built-in Firewire output is certainly more convienent and foolproof
than any other possible solution.

You don't have nearly the range of options (particularly at the lower-
end) because you are dealing with a laptop. If you were working with
a desktop machine with spare slots the landscape would look very
different.

Actually I now remember that there are some cheap PCI TV cards that have
analog in that would work and I believe they are around $50. Searching will
find several. I have Pinnacle TV Wonder
