So, I've already created a thread of convincing my parents to let me make my PC, which has been accomplished. This is a few months later.

Story
So, I jump on my PC today (not literally) so that I can play a video game. I play Minecraft, along with other more intensive games. So, I decide to 1v1 one of my friends. I realize sooner or later that he uses Ethernet, which gives him a superior advantage. My router (I believe the 5th gen) apple router is about 1 room away from me, but that very much increases ping like hell. Especially because I live on the west coast, where most servers are on the east coast. So, I decided to go and try to get Ethernet.

Brief Benefits of MC Ethernet Gaming
The main benefits is a better connection to wifi or a VPN is the decreased ping in milliseconds. This is a main factor in what decides who will win a pvp fight, as lower ping results in more hits, especially to people with higher ping. An example of my ping to Mineplex is around the 100-120ms without a VPN (WTFast), and with one, around 80-100ms with a VPN (WTFast). Some servers don't even allow a VPN. So, the lower ping in ms, the higher performance in pvp.

The Reason Why I Need Help
My dad is the "technology" guy, so he handles all of this. My PC is a gaming rig, and decided I wanted some CAT6 Ethernet cables from Monoprice. But, there is one problem. Being so close, I could put an ugly wire right through my door. And he's okay with that. IF HE ISN'T IN THE HOUSE! So, if he comes, I would always have to go and plug out around 10ft of Ethernet cable and stuff it somewhere until he's gone. And he is in the house a lot. Also very ugly and inconvenient, and my mom would get pissed for large wires sitting in my room. They wires would have to go under the door too. Very inconvenient, ugly, and can only really serve as a temporary solution. My dad IS NOT the DIY type, he would rather buy anything paid and never do anything himself, even if that option is overpriced. So, drilling holes for a cable is a big NO NO. Also, my dad doesn't understand the importance of Ethernet in gaming. He thinks wifi is enough, and will tune off if he hears a word about "gaming" (he is a man who has misconceptions about gaming, thinks they ruin ur mind, and never bought me a console in my entire life. Never played an fps, I've always wanted too.) He's also a Mac guy, and sitting 5 feet away from the modem, decides to use wifi. :pfff:

So there! Hope you found any suggestions to kindly convince my dad that ethernet is important!

PS: You can easily drill a tiny hole through the wall to get the wire to my PC easily. What I have to do is make it travel across the wall, under my door, across my door, making a hazard for tripping, then go through the back of my chest, my table, then my PC. Dissembling all this constantly is a nightmare.

Problem is, idk what your house looks like lol! I'd say try running it under your carpet.

Expensive option: Buy a 5Ghz router and a high speed wifi card for your PC (if you don't already have one).

That's funny that he's all wifi. Because me and my dad use Ethernet ONLY. No wifi in my house. 😀

Let me show you the pathway it must take. We have a downstairs too, so wifi is a must. I'm 13, and jobs aren't a thing that you can get at 13 years old. I also need Gbit Ethernet cable. Its not the money people! I can get a freakin cable for $4 and its 25ft long! Also, even though the wire wouldn't be touching my dad's stuff, he just doesn't want it there! I JUST NEED HELP EXPLAINING HIM THAT ETHERNET IS IMPORTANT FOR GAMING!

Well, stuff happens when you are 13. We were ALL 13 once. And Dad's rules, rule.

Speaking as a dad and grandad....the 13 years olds gaming performance is far down on the priority list.
As above...look into powerline devices. Uses the wiring already in the walls.

Ok, well then. My dad isn't the type to do anything, and has no reason for it, because he doesn't understand what benefits you even get from Ethernet. I only get about half my speed because there is a wall in the way, and wired will greatly help when it comes to ping. I live on the west coast, and all the servers are on the east coast. Any quicker connection, even 5ms less, will always help. I can't game at all because east coast ppl ping reach me in pvp and wreck me. So, performance is needed to actually play the freakin game! And since ALL my friends have ethernet, they wreck me too, with their blazing ping! And they all use the same ISP, and live pretty close.

Whatever wiring or wireless you have in the house will not affect west coast-east coast performance.
25 feet vs 3,000 miles.

What is the actual ping when you ping your router IP address?

This is mine to my router (Cat5e wired):
nyI61lW.png

I get exactly the same WiFi in the same room. What do you get?

You mean like, my external ip? Like the ping to that? Ethernet will improve the ping performance. I've already tried it once with an old Ethernet cable, and it works wonders. But, that doesn't really work anymore.
Ping to my external ip: 20ms (average)

The first try was 12, the second was 30, and the third was 14

No, not your external IP....the internal IP of the router. That is the connection you are trying to 'fix.
Probably 192.168.1.1 Anything outboard of that is outside your influence.

The ping rate can be effected by the wifi signal strength. If it's like 2 bars then I can see why the ping is bad.

Ok, it's 3ms, 5ms, 1ms.
I have 5 bars.

3, 5, 1.
Then a wire will not help all that much, if any. You're getting a good signal, with a very low ping to your actual router.
Outboard of that is outside your sphere of influence.
The WiFi is not the actual problem.

Its also for my internet. My internet is bottlenecked by the location of my PC. I can only get half of what we paid for. The Mac gets a full 100mbits down, while I only get 25-50mbits. Ethernet would solve this. I do watch high resolution videos, like 1440p, 1080p, etc.

Also, do you know how to decrease the ping otherwise then?

Decrease ping to the router? An ethernet cable, or move the PC closer to the router. (But it's already low.
Decrease ping time to the game server? Move cross country.
Increase your reported bandwidth? An ethernet cable, or as above, a powerline device.

Creative Cat5e cabling, or powerline connection. If you can't convince dad of this....then you are mostly out of luck.

WiFi is always the last choice in connection types.

I've heard there are VPN services that make your ping lower. Is there any best one? Also, are all modems capable of using the CAT6 Ethernet cable? To my dad, ethernet is the last choice. No wait. Buying a new router is his last choice. He will never touch any of those cables for some reason.

PS: Where is the internal ip when you do ipconfig in cmd?

1. VPN to make it 'faster. You are still distance limited! If the game server is 'here', and you are 'there'...how will adding a VPN 'somewhere else' speed things up?

2. Cat6, Cat5e...all the same for your purposes. Yes, it will work with that router.

3. Dad does not want to mess with anything because it already works perfectly, for him, at the present time. Any change does not make things 'better' for his uses.

4. Internal IP address. Whatever the IP address is for the router.
Run cmd
ipconfig, ENTER
The router IP will be listed under "Default Gateway"

RIP! 141ms average

You get 25-50 download speeds and you get low latency ping times to your router. A game only needs maybe 1mbit to run well. Even high def video from netflix only uses 6m.

If you are having issues it is not your internet connection or your router. Most people would love to have what you have especially on a wireless connection.

Be sure you have a actual issue before you waste a lot of time changing things.

I get high latency ping times, compared to literally everyone else I know who lives in the US.

PS: WTFast does seem to help by decreasing the ping to about 80-120ms.
