How to Convince my Parents Wifi isn't Enough!

So, I've already created a thread of convincing my parents to let me make my PC, which has been accomplished. This is a few months later.

Story
So, I jump on my PC today (not literally) so that I can play a video game. I play Minecraft, along with other more intensive games. So, I decide to 1v1 one of my friends. I realize sooner or later that he uses Ethernet, which gives him a superior advantage. My router (I believe the 5th gen) apple router is about 1 room away from me, but that very much increases ping like hell. Especially because I live on the west coast, where most servers are on the east coast. So, I decided to go and try to get Ethernet.

Brief Benefits of MC Ethernet Gaming
The main benefits is a better connection to wifi or a VPN is the decreased ping in milliseconds. This is a main factor in what decides who will win a pvp fight, as lower ping results in more hits, especially to people with higher ping. An example of my ping to Mineplex is around the 100-120ms without a VPN (WTFast), and with one, around 80-100ms with a VPN (WTFast). Some servers don't even allow a VPN. So, the lower ping in ms, the higher performance in pvp.

The Reason Why I Need Help
My dad is the "technology" guy, so he handles all of this. My PC is a gaming rig, and decided I wanted some CAT6 Ethernet cables from Monoprice. But, there is one problem. Being so close, I could put an ugly wire right through my door. And he's okay with that. IF HE ISN'T IN THE HOUSE! So, if he comes, I would always have to go and plug out around 10ft of Ethernet cable and stuff it somewhere until he's gone. And he is in the house a lot. Also very ugly and inconvenient, and my mom would get pissed for large wires sitting in my room. They wires would have to go under the door too. Very inconvenient, ugly, and can only really serve as a temporary solution. My dad IS NOT the DIY type, he would rather buy anything paid and never do anything himself, even if that option is overpriced. So, drilling holes for a cable is a big NO NO. Also, my dad doesn't understand the importance of Ethernet in gaming. He thinks wifi is enough, and will tune off if he hears a word about "gaming" (he is a man who has misconceptions about gaming, thinks they ruin ur mind, and never bought me a console in my entire life. Never played an fps, I've always wanted too.) He's also a Mac guy, and sitting 5 feet away from the modem, decides to use wifi.

So there! Hope you found any suggestions to kindly convince my dad that ethernet is important!

PS: You can easily drill a tiny hole through the wall to get the wire to my PC easily. What I have to do is make it travel across the wall, under my door, across my door, making a hazard for tripping, then go through the back of my chest, my table, then my PC. Dissembling all this constantly is a nightmare.

This is why the future of the USA is in the crapper. In the time you have wasted posting to this thread, you could have easily gone outside, walked door-to-door in your community, and asked your neighbors if they had any chores for you to undertake to earn some money.

You could have earned the cash, you know, with a little initiative and sweat equity. Show some backbone, Bud.

Wash windows, pull weeds, mow grass, vacuum, wash clothes (the list is endless as any adult knows ...).

Your father will likely take notice. His little boy will be on the way to being a responsible young man.

There are plenty of ways for a kid to earn the few dollars needed. Whatever happened to enterprise?

It does seem ungrateful, having persuaded your Dad to buy you a computer, to now complain about it and say he never does anything for you. Who knows, perhaps he doesn't want you wasting your life playing computer games.

Stop whining and take a little responsibility for your life.

Well that just happened! My PCI wifi just stopped working, and had to reboot. Ok then. It isn't getting the wire, or how long it needs to be. It's about telling why choose ethernet over wifi. For the most part, it doesn't seem to really be driver updates for my Qualcomm Atheros AR938x Wireless Network Adapter. My motherboard has onboard support for Gbit ethernet.

It also seems powerline is highly unstable/very slow in terms of ping, and even has packet loss, which i rarely get.

This is what I'd do, I would ask your father for enough money from your birthday (if your birthday is close) and buy a high speed 5Ghz router designed for gaming and a high speed wifi card for your PC.

The 5th gen Airport Extreme the OP says they have already has a 5Ghz band.

Buy a 500 Mbps powerline network adapter kit for $50. [quotemsgend]

As unnecessarily rude as this was, powerlines is your perfect solution. A cheaper 200mb kit would suffice as it will easily transmit 100mb/s to a single device which is far superior to most internet plans. A simple plug by router, plug by pc. Netgear would be my go to brand as their customer service and software support is outstanding.


Edit** whoops sorry for being out of date. Turns out the links toms emails out link to an archive of the thread when it was posted. Refreshed page when I posted this and 2 pages of thread appeared.

Also to those advising that it's not his WiFi causing an issue. Outside of possible driver error. The kids tested it already with Ethernet and measured the improvement. Chances are there is something we are all overlooking. Like maybe network priorities, maybe his pc is set to least important. Whatever. If Ethernet has worked for him. Stop telling him it won't help.

As for convincing your dad, the major benefits to wired connections are security and stability. Powerlines aren't as bad as many reviews make out. If they work they work fine (really old house cables circa the world wars are hit and miss with them). If they don't then you know during the return period and just state they aren't working to spec. So are unfit for purpose. Most retailers will abide by that warranty.

Source - my 4 way powerlines transmit a 100mb connection at router, to 90mb at destination across two floors and ping at 10-28 from the UK to east coast servers and Europe. 40 for west coast and 80(ouch) to Russia, but I'm guessing that's a flaw in the Russian system. All my polish/russian contacts complain of living with 1.2mb download speeds so meh.

The problem here is your not able to explain to US why you need ethernet. And I would give up now because you don't. Your speed is perfectly able to make multiplayer games run fine. Your issue is you THINK ethernet will magically improve speed more than it will.

You previously stated pings around 20-40 ms. To clarify, that's faster then most monitors can update at. If you think your cognitive reactions are that fast, I suggest you ring Guinness or Ripley, and get them to hook you up to some kind of measuring device, because that's pretty much a world record.

Subsequently, you can tour and earn money. Enough to buy your own Internet connection and pipe it direct into your room.

The pertinent point of all this is that your living in cloud cooked land. Granted, you'll certainly get a more STABLE connection, but faster? No, not taking into account electrical cable resistance.

Scare the heck out of him by showing him some latest news articles about WiFi s being hacked and identity theft thru WiFi systems. Then he will want the upgrade , not you. Government uses scare tactics all the time. saves you money too
