How to disable windows security update?

Is there a way to disable it from updating when I shutdown the PC? I am running windows 8.1 and this update seems to be the cause of a DPC Watchdog error I have when playing games.

Not sure if this is what you want...but if you go into windows network and internet settings and find your network....there is a switch that says something like "set as metered connection". If you set this....the way I understand it is...your PC will only download the most critical updates.

I have used this extensively to cut down on my bandwidth as I have a satellite capped connection.
