How to do a bare Metal (new hard drive) Windows 7 'Full Installation on an eMach

I've been meaning to upgrade a three year old eMachines desktop with Windows XP SP2 for some time.
A badly entrenched virus (first time ever) is the trigger.
I want to do the installation on a brand new 1Terabyte Hard Drive.
Must I install Windows XP first using the eMachines Recovery DVD, or can I simply load WIndows 7 (would purchase a Full Install OEM Version from Newegg)?

The Windows 7 OEM version is not an upgrade, so it doesn't require a previous OS to be installed.
