Hi guys, I've bought my first SSD.. which is the 970 Evo Plus. After finally getting it to show up in disk management and be usable im having troubles with it. I at first tried to do a fresh windows install.. the SSD wasnt showing up in my boot options but the original HDD was still there to boot off. So i booted off the original and my desktop was completely changed as if it had actually booted off the SSD. None of my programs showed up.. looked like a bare computer.. no google, no taskbar.. nothing. I then put the usb that i installed windows with back in and it somehow booted me to my original HDD in which i can access all my files like normal.

Sorry if this is a little hard to understand whats going on. Basically how do successfully clone my current HDD to my new SSD to where my desktop looks the same. I.E. I keep my same background, my taskbar still has all my programs on it etc. Or is that not how it works? Do I have to do a fresh install and then basically redo my computer to where I originally had it.

Is there anyway to clone without deleting it off the original HDD that the information is on?

Thanks!

OK, given those numbers, a full clone can be done.
Your 'fresh windows install' worked exactly as it should...a bare OS. It knows nothing about your old stuff and settings on the original OS.

A clone is a full copy of the original stuff to a new drive. And then you completely wipe the old drive.
Since you're going from a regular HDD to an NVMe drive, read the link at the very end of this before you start:

-----------------------------
Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive (you can mostly ignore this step, because your drive has no cables)
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

Ok so With no other HDD installed it boots off the SSD with no problems. Nice and quick. As soon as I plug in the original HDD it starts booting off of that and I cant see the SSD in my boot options.

I did and the m.2 wasnt there. I actually got it now though =) Plugged in the usb with windows install on it.. restarted and all the drives showed up this time. Disabled the rest and booted in off the m.2. Reformatted the original HDD and all is good now. Thank you again for the help.
