how to fix dvd-cd rom to read disks

how can I fix my DVD-cd rom to recognize and read my disks? have windows XP operating system on my dell latitude laptop.

This often the sign of a dirty CD/DVD drive or one that is defective. Will the drive read any disks?

Does Windows recognize the drive itself in My Computer?

You can try cleaning the drive with a cleaning disk (you can buy at almost any electronics store or department, i.e., Radio Shack, Walmart, etc). If that fails to restore function, you may need to replace the optical drive in your Dell.
