If your computer was borderline capable of running Windows 10, you might get a nasty surprise when trying to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Microsoft quietly increased the memory requirements of the updated version so if you only just had enough for vanilla Windows 10, you may not now.
If you need to fix the minimum system requirements issue for Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you only have one option. Upgrade your hardware. Otherwise, stick to vanilla Windows 10. The Anniversary Update adds quite a few new tricks but nothing you cannot live without if you need to.
Fix minimum system requirements issue for Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Windows 10 could get by with 1GB of RAM but the Anniversary Update increases that to 2GB. This wasn’t very well advertised, if at all and took more than a few people by surprise. One of the best things about Windows 10 was its ability to run on older or lower spec machines. While that is still true, doubling the RAM requirement without telling people first wasn’t the best move.
So essentially, you have two options. Stay with Windows 10 and avoid the Anniversary Update or upgrade your RAM.
The other hardware requirements are still the same though:
• Minimum of 1GHz or faster processor
• Minimum of 2GB RAM
• Minimum of 16GB of hard drive space for 32-bit or 20GB for 64-bit
• Minimum of DirectX 9 graphics chip or card with WDDM 1.0 driver
• Minimum of 800x600 display
