Most of us know that when Windows is performing an update to leave well alone. That doesn’t help if the power goes out or the cat runs across the keyboard or some other unforeseen event happens to cause an issue. Accidental restarts can happen for all sorts of reasons and even if they happen during an upgrade, it isn’t the end of the world.
If you need to fix the Windows 10 Anniversary Update installation after an accidental restart, this is what you need to do.
Fix Windows 10 Anniversary Update installation after accidental restart
The first thing to do is not panic. While you may need to do a little work, it isn’t the end of the world. Just follow these simple steps.
1. Reboot your computer normally after the restart.
2. Navigate to Settings and Update & security.
3. Click ‘Check for updates’ and allow the process to complete.
4. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update should proceed as normal.
If it doesn’t:
1. Navigate to ‘C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download’.
2. Delete the contents of the folder. Reboot into Safe Mode if you cannot delete it.
3. Reboot your computer.
4. Navigate to Settings, Update and security.
5. Select ‘Check for updates’ and run the process again.
The update files are stored in the file above and may have been corrupted during that accidental restart. By deleting them, you essentially force the entire process to begin afresh. This will involve more downloading and waiting but the update should now proceed normally.
