How to flash a hard drives firmware?

Any ideas how to flash a hard drives firmware?

I don't think they release drive firmware to the public.

I was looking for the same thing when the firmware on my last (ever) Maxtor drive went tits up, and quite a few people said you couldn't get it.

I Googled for ages and couldn't find it either.
