Im currently using a Comcast router but I need to have a 192 ip addres instead of a 10. etc .. so I call Comcast and they said they can give me a 192 for an extra 50 bucks a month. I was told that I can get a router and threw setting I may switch to a 192 for free ???? im confused please help. 🙁 what router you recommend and how I can switch it to a 192 if possible ??? the company that I will be working for in a week ( Home call center rep ) they scan my system and told me since I will be taking credit cards over the phone and i needed to be in high security ip address and cant have wifi on and I needed a 192 ip address. its a virtual call center but you work from home . Lots of companies are going this route Jetblu@ is one of them and much more .

You have both a cable modem and router from comcast? Any router you purchase from any retailer is going to assign IP addresses of 192.X.X.XXX to each device whether it be wired or wifi.

Not necessarily true. The router can be configured to give out addresses on any network.

@OP - I don't know anything about Comcast, but that offer is a complete rip-off. The question is, why do you want a 192.x.x.x address rather than a 10.x.x.x one? Both are private IP addresses that won't be seen by the outside world, so what difference does it make? If you are trying to get round a ban on some forum or game then this is not going to work.

Its not me its a company that I will be working for in a week ( Home call center rep ) and they scan my system and told me since I will be taking credit cards over the phone and cant have wifi on and I needed a 192 ip address.

I'm afraid that answer makes no sense whatsoever. The IP address has nothing to do with whether it is on a wireless network or on a wired connection. And neither have anything to do with taking credit card numbers on your phone. Both address ranges are private addresses that can't be accessed from an external address.

I can understand the not having a wireless network bit, to avoid drive past hijacking of your network, but that - again - is nothing to do with the IP address. Still, if it's essential for your job then you'll have to pay up. But you should be able to claim the expense from your employer.

no its not me its a customer service home base job .,... I will not be in an office I will be working from ... like jetbluue when you the 1800 numb to make a flight reservation your actually calling a rep that works from home, and many other companies are doing it too less expenses and they save money on construction (site ) water and electric and office supplies. But the company I signed up with told me I cant have any ip addres just 192... for the fact I will be talking credit info over the internet and I will be putting credit info online . that's why .. I called Comcast they did confirm that the 192 is a more secure ip then the 10.XXX etc ..... but they charge 50 extra on my bill because they said its a business class .

Who ever has been telling you 192. addresses are more secure than 10. addresses is a complete and total idiot...and I would yell that in their face if I could.

These blocks as well as another one in the 172. are defined to only be used WITHIN your own house/business etc. When you access the internet this address is translated into a address that is visible to everyone else and is called a public address. Every single device you have will appear to come from this common ip no matter what address you used in the inside of your network. Since the address used by your machines are never exposed it doesn't matter what you use.

So the solution is to buy a router you can set the lan to 192. addresses and put it between the comcast router and your PC. The WAN port of that router would get a 10, address from the comcast and give your PC a 192. So when the traffic would go to the intenet the first router will translate the 192. address to a 10. address and then the comcast would translate it to the real address.

When they scan your machine and claim how safe it is I would go....hahaha I am really using a "insecure" 10 address and you can't detect it you idiots.

I would really consider not working for this company they truly are stupid when it comes to security.
