thanks all ... this weekend with cliffy will use a buffer with a
liberal dose of elbow grease.

problem always is ... that you don't know, what you don't know. when
you guys told
me the bar was stainless steel, i spoke to two chroming shops that
verified
chroming on stainless steel is a bad idea. just won't last.

so then i asked about getting it professionally buffed out since this
was the other
route rgp suggested, he said no problem. lockbar will look just like
chrome when he was
done. cost? $125.

will post before and after pic's assuming. i hope to be wearing
sunglasses for the after pic!

thanx for your interest!

You can disagree, but you'd still be wrong. 🙂

There is plenty of stainless that a magnet will stick to. These are
definitely stainless.

Where do you get a 3m scotchbrite wheel? I am assuming this goes on the
grinder? Or does it go on a drill?

I actually got one at Sears in the tool department. Heres a link to one
online. Look at the combiwheel, combi-s. Thats the one I use in medium
grit. http://www.expressplus.trdistsupport.com/bench.php?az=73872939

I've used it on our drill press and with a high speed hand drill like
the dewalt 2500 rpm model that Allen uses for polishing. Awesome drill
motor, btw. Get one :)

... getting back to the question at hand \-), here is what i *think* i
am hearing from the group, plus some of my own findings ...

1. a local shop that will chrome the lock down bar for $125. look in
the yellow pages under "plating" for a vendor near you.

2. i can get a brand new one from marco for about the same price as
chroming.

3. sand by hand / buff the bar going ONE way for a couple of hours with
some fine abrasive. i have no life anyway, so this sounds like a plan
for me.

thanx!

I'll put you to work on it with the DeWalt 2500 rpm drill and the
scotchbrite wheel, Ron. However, if you REALLY want it to shine like
chrome without the expense we can send it to Hi-Lustre for polish. Costs
less, looks nearly as good as chrome :)

I'm aware of the benefits of simichrome, #11. I've had the same tube of
it for damn near 10 years! And yes we will try it after the power
scotchbrite wheel. I just have to babysit Ron with my tube of simichrome
or he'll squirt it out like toothpaste and you really don't need much :)

Chris -- cheap stainless is magnetic -- not the good stuff.

I have a friend who used to do metal refinishing. We started doing
lock bars on all the pins I sell about 6 months ago. They look brand
new when I get them back from him. he has the right equipment to do
these right. We charge 25 bucks to walk ins at the store with a good
exchange or he will do your bar but you have to be without until he
does another batch. (usually about a week) This includes new foam on
the backside as well. A Lot cheaper than buying new ones.
Take a look. Hopefully I have these links right...If not E mail me and
I will send some pictures.
These particular bars are from an F-14 ans a Bobby Orr. They were in
SAD shape to say the least.
This guy is good with getting the curved areas and the "brushed" look
to all go in the right direction all througout the bar. Anyone can buy
the equipment I guess...but it's the operator of the equipment that
makes it happen.

Anyone interested let me know.

Thanks,
Kurt
