How to get game patches for ps3

Hello,
i need to get my game Skyirm for a PS3 working properly( the problem is leveling up) it slows down and gets chopy to be able to play it so i need patches but i cant seem to know where and how to get them.

PS3 games will check for patches automatically as long as you have an internet connection. Does it start off choppy of after playing for a while? How old is the PS3? I've heard some people having heat issues depending on where they put the console.

last time i checked they were working on a patch for the ps3 lag (i never had lag when i played)
