How to get the best performance out of a Shuttle?

Hello,
I have an

SN41G2 with 2X512M (Crucial CT279338),
AMD Athlon 2800(333MHz) Barton ,
120GB Maxtor 7200rpm HD,
NEC ND-1300A DVD re-writer
Windows XP professional.

Despite all this, I'm not convinced that is ir running as quickly as it can.
Unfortunately I have nothing to compare it with. Can anyone recommend any PC
performance software which may help. Are there any BIOS/Windows settings
that I really need to set for optimal performance?

Peter,
There are many things that "may" improve performance - first
download a benchmark util such as "Sisoft Sandra" - the free version is
sufficient. You can benchmark and compare performance results against
similar hardware.
In XP there are a few things that can make a big difference - install the
latest nvidia Nforce drivers, (there is a new ide HD driver in there)

You can disable drive indexing - untick the "Allow indexing service to
index drive" option under the drive general properties (my computer)
You can stop all un-necessary services, see this guide -
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
You can turn-off un-needed XP display features - Right click "My Computer"
then "Properties" click the Advanced tab > under Performance click the
Settings button > Uncheck everything except "Use drop shadows for icon
labels on the desktop"
The "System restore" feature also uses resources and if you are willing to
risk having no restore points after a failure - then that can be turned-off
too.
