The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is a significant update released just over a year since Windows 10 was launched. It includes a raft of fixes, upgrades and a couple of new features. As future patches and releases will be based on version 1607, which the anniversary update brings us up to, it is well worth installing. If you want to know how to get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, here’s what to do.

There are two ways to get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Through Windows Update and through the media creation tool.

1. Perform a backup of any critical data you cannot lose.
2. Navigate to Settings, Update & Security and Activation.
3. Click ‘Check for updates’ and allow the process to complete.
4. Perform the update when prompted.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is quite large so will take a while to download depending on your connection speed. It will also take around 20 minutes to install, or longer if you’re using an older computer.

If you would prefer a clean install, you can use the Microsoft media creation tool to create an updated installer.

1. Navigate to the Microsoft media creation tool website and download the tool.
2. Select 32-bit or 64-bit Windows depending on what you’re running now.
3. Choose between ‘Upgrade this PC’ or ‘Create installation media for another PC’.
4. Choose the media, language, edition and architecture and create the media.
5. Burn to a DVD or save to USB.
6. Install when you’re ready.

If you use the image method, just install Windows 10 as normal once you have created your media of choice.
