Hello Guys,

I have a need for having 64 GB RAM on the new rig I'm gonna build. However, I was told by a local shop guy that all Z170 mobo's support dual channel RAM with 4 slots so a 4*16Gb channel kit won't work properly, and I am stuck with using a max 32GB RAM (2*16 OR 4*8).

I absolutely need 64GB since I need to run multiple VM's for work, besides the usual gaming.

Please help/suggest. Much Appreciate!

I agree that the mobo says 64GB supported. However, after coming back from the shop I also tried searching on web, and some Youtube videos said that use 64GB only in a quad channel, with 4/8 slots are given, and never in a dual channel with 4 slots, or otherwise the couple of 16GB sticks you put in there may not either work at all or may be performance degraded or their settings may need to be manually adjusted.

At least 10-12 Windows Server / Red Hat VM's with minimum 4GB vRAM each.

Won't a dual channel vs quad channel make difference here?

You mean 5820K/5830K with X99 mobo right?

OK, just checking. That is out on the edge of normal usage.

You can put 4 sticks in a dual channel board or otherwise why would any of them even have 4 ram slots.

That is what i was wondering...why make a mention of 64GB supported if this was the Issue? Somehow too much contradiction out there. Maybe something to do with difference between a dual channel and quad channel?
