Plasma TV recently broke 🙁. Can't get a new TV right now but I do have this monitor: http://www.amazon.com/HP-2010i-20-Inch-Diagonal-Monitor/dp/B003FMUL68

First of all, is it even possible to hook up a PS3 to a computer monitor? If so, what things would I need to do so to get 720p VIDEO and SOUND through the monitor?

I thought you needed this VGA-HDMI connector, and i found out on amazon they had those turns out it was some kind of scam? It was just a cable with VGA on one end and HDMI on the other and turns out you need a digital converter box or something to convert the signal?

Thank you so much in advance!

Edit: The monitor has a 1600x900 resolution and that should run 720p fine with a DVI-HDMI cable right?

That link seems to indicate that you can get video and audio out of different ports at the same time so you should be good in that respect.

The only thing I would suggest different is the "Y splitter". I think something like this would suit you better instead of the splitter and the coupler.

I am assuming you already have regular composite rca (yellow, red, white) coming out of the ps3.

Ahh. And I don't suppose it has a displayport input?

Your best bet would just be something simple like this: http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Adapter-Plated-Connector-Female/dp/B000FUVNX8

That is... as long as you just have DVI input. If you only have VGA input, then you're pretty well screwed, as one is an analogue signal and the other is digital. You can find converters, but they'll be expensive and unreliable.

What does it have?
If you have DVI (depending on what type) You can get an adapter for HDMI-DVI connection and taht will work... However, getting the sound to come through as well most likely won't.

So i guess first thing first. What does your monitor have as available ports? Vga, Dvi, Hdmi, Display port?

It looks like your monitor has a DVI-D port which means that you can use a hdmi to dvi cable to get video. Audio will not go through this cable.

I don't know if this is possible but if you can get audio out of your RCA output, you can get a RCA to 3.5 mm cable and use that for audio into your monitor. But I don't know if the PS3 will let you simultaneously output video over hdmi and audio over RCA.

But these cables are pretty cheap so I would give it a shot.

Yes i was thinking the same thing.

Did some research and my monitor has DVI-D. It does support HDCP and it has built in speakers. Also got a 3.5mm jack on the back.

I was gonna get a dvi d-hdmi adapter, and then a y splitter for the sound. I would use the regular composite cable

Solution
Well I did go to bestbuy and purchased an HDMI to DVI connector. Works perfect, but it was $40. Very expensive as on amazon it is only a couple bucks. Only reason I forked over $40 was because I just wanted it quick.

As for audio, I couldn't find the cable at bestbuy. I went home and played without audio, until I pulled out some cables from a turtle beach X12 I had. Turns out, the little 3.5mm splitter that comes with the headset works, and I have audio on my monitor's speakers now!
