How to Hook Up Surround Sound to PC

I have a PC hooked up to a TV via HDMI. I have a surround sound receiver as well with optical outputs. What would be the best method to get surround sound on the computer?

-FC 6300
-GTX 970
-8GB RAM

You have an optical output? Then plug the optical output into your motherboard's I/O

Optical won't get you surround sound in many cases (you can look up optical audio and surround sound for what can and can't work). Best way is to get a surround sound receiver with HDMI inputs and outputs and use that.

A receiver should pass through video to the TV, although some cheaper and/or older models do not. Need to check your model.
