The 4th pin allows PWM control of fan speed, but your 3 pin will connect to it fine..you may need to go in to your BIOS and set the control from PWM to DC.
As far as which 3 of the 4 pins to use, your 3 pin connector has slots on it and will only fit one way

right, the connector only goes on 1 way. should be pretty easy to figure out which way that is

The plastic tab on the header goes into a slot on the fan plug and the connection is correct.
