So I managed to boot up my first self-built PC, and the BIOS came up exactly as the motherboard instructions said. Obviously, now I want to install the operating system, but I don't know how. My motherboard is an MSI Z97S SLI Krait edition, using Click BIOS 4.. I am trying to install Windows 10 from a USB. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You need to install it on a HDD or SSD (which I assume you have plugged in on your motherboard). Then you need to go to BIOS, boot options and place the USB in the first place in the boot priority list. Or you can just open the Boot menu without opening the bios and select the USB drive.

Is there a way to do this from an external optical drive? I am building a PC with a MSi Z170A and have a windows 10 disk.

Sure. It will install from an external DVD. Just like from a USB stick.

Cheers!

I have a similar problem to the person who posted the original question and have followed your advice. I am using a USB with an ISO file and have placed it first in boot priority, while only my SSD is connected. When I try to boot the computer after that, it only shows the message:
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."

What OS? You can't boot from just the ISO file on a USB stick.

Whoops, forgot to mention that it was Windows 10 and it is on an MSI motherboard.
