How to install OS on a new Computer without an optical drive?

Hi guys,

I am going to build a new computer, and I didn't want to have an internal optical drive. Is it the same thing to install the OS with an external drive, as it is with an internal drive? I am sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't know anything about this subject. I figured that I'm not going to use a cd drive anymore because everything is with downloading and it would be a waist of space and watts.
