So I have an SSD with Windows 10 that I intend to keep as it is.

I also have an old HDD that I backed up with Google Drive and wiped, that I plan on installing Qubes onto. Here’s the video I followed to wipe my HDD (I did 1 pass): How to Wipe a Hard Drive - Permanently Delete All Data :: Windows 10 - YouTube

I wiped my HDD as a safety precaution. But I was told on Reddit that my HDD would need an operating system to download Qubes. According to File Explorer > This PC, My HDD has 0GB on it, so I’m sure the Windows 10 it used to use is gone.

So in my situation, how do I install Qubes with a new USB from start to finish? Should I remove my SSD before I begin?

Also, let’s say I have Qubes. Windows is only on my SSD, and Qubes is only on my HDD.
If I wanted Windows, would I unplug my HDD (Qubes) and install my SSD, so my PC automatically boots Windows?
If I wanted Qubes, would I unplug my SSD (Windows) and install my HDD, so my PC automatically boots Qubes?
In short, should I only have one storage device plugged in at a time - that being the one with the operating system I want to currently use, to maintain isolation between the operating systems?
I want Windows = SSD, HDD uninstalled
I want Qubes = HDD, SSD uninstalled

To avoid me being confused, please quote a specific question with an answer - I’ll learn better

Please explain from start to finish in steps like I’m 5 years old

Thank you so much!

Assuming you've created the USB correctly, if it does not naturally boot from the USB (it might), restart, go into the BIOS, and select the USB to boot from.

Question - Is all this hassle worth it to look at a couple of web sites?

Hi again,

I took these photos with my phone and emailed them to myself so I could show you the screen that I’m stuck on:
https://pin.it/6fXSdkf
https://pin.it/3TKtnaS

This time, I did the steps correctly:
-I installed both Qubes iso and Rufus to my SSD
-Used Rufus on my USB stick
-Shut down
-Removed my SSD
-Entered my BIOS and made my USB the ONLY boot option

Yet regardless, the USB still isn’t visible next to the HDD in the photos above, like the YouTube video I followed above

Do you know the fix to this?

Thank you

I can't read those pics.
But as far as I can tell, neither of those are of your BIOS.

But the system is booting from the USB that you created with Rufus?
Thats what those pics are?
If so, you will not see the USB.

You should only see the HDD as a place to install to.

The pictures are what I see as opposed to what's on the video at 3:08. He selects his USB, but all I see is my HDD.

Step 1) After you make the USB, power OFF - Check
Step 2) Physically disconnect the SSD - Check
Step 3) Power ON - Check
Step 4) Enter the BIOS and verify the USB is in the boot order somewhere - Check
Step 5) Continue, booting from the USB and installing Qubes there

"But the system is booting from the USB that you created with Rufus?"
Yes - I entered my BIOS, and set my USB as the only boot option

"If so, you will not see the USB."
So if I boot from the USB, which is the only option, I won't see my USB when I get to that part, 3:08 in the video? I'll only see my HDD? Why in the video does his USB show then?

At 3:08, he is selecting a TARGET drive to install to.
He has 2 possible targets. A 500GB and a 120GB.

In your case, the HDD.

Hey man,

So I did everything right. I’m on Qubes now. The problem now is, no matter what I do, my internet doesn’t connect. My Qubes very rarely shows the red internet icon at the top right and when it does, it says no internet connection. My Ethernet was plugged in from start to finish of installing this thing, and I’m assuming this is the reason why nothing related to Tor will load, and I won’t connect to any bridges. Unless there’s a simple fix that can get me up and running, because no other forum gives a straight explanation, I’m on the brink of uninstalling Qubes, wiping my HDD again, wiping my USB and installing Whonix on KVM on Ubuntu instead. I’ve lost all patience with this thing. I’ve spent about 4 hours trying to figure out an issue that should’ve never existed in the first place. Do you know the fix?

Thank you

I've never installed or run Qubes, so I don't know all the intricacies of its network connections and settings.

What you might think about is just running Ubuntu from a flash drive, as a LiveUSB.

Yeah, I was thinking of forgetting Qubes altogether and downloading Ubuntu on a flash drive, downloading KVM as the hypervisor, and downloading Whonix that way

Thank you for all the help you've given me!

Not sure what you think that will do for you.

It is a kernel level virtual machine tool, running on a Linux host system.

Guest OS's of Windows or Linux.

Yep, I just went on Reddit (I post to multiple places for more answers/likelihood of a response) and I was told that KVM can only be downloaded onto a Linux OS. So in my case, it'll be Ubuntu (currently working on that) > KVM > Whonix

Have a good rest of your day man. You taught me how to download an OS using a USB on a separate storage device, which was a pretty big lesson for me due to lack of straight answers elsewhere. Thanks!
