As the end of security update for Windows 10 comes near, how do I upgrade my system to Windows 11 with unsupported hardware?

Thank you.

The caveat being, that it could STOP working with any Microsoft update. Possible? Yes with various workarounds. Will it continue to work? Unknown.
I agree 100% Microsoft is well Microsoft.

My take on this issue is out of the 4 years I have used Windows 11 on the non supported hardware I have gotten 1.460 day out of an cast off system and even if Microsoft send the black bullet over the internet and things change tomorrow I would have lost nothing for the extra milage I gained.

The countless cups of coffee using the computer and it still gaming minus not having AVX instructions.

I saved 2 whole generation of parts upgrades as if I replaced hardware 4 years ago for Window 11 it would be time to upgrade again market wise as the 4 year old parts are now over the hill.

I agree running Window 11 on non supported CPU might end but right now it's like telling someone it might rain and you stay in and you missed a great day.

My advice is to spend $25.00 + shipping for a new SSD.

Unplug your current Windows 10 SSD/ Hard Drive + any other drive you may have. And install Windows 11 on fresh SSD.

I'm always extra anal about others peoples personal stuff on there older OS install.

Plus you need to just do a fresh clean install of Windows 11 and move forward. If you don't and it runs like crud you need to know it's not the old Windows 10 baggage and just a driver Windows 11 needs.

The added security of if something has a minor glitch you don't loose everything putting 11 over Windows 10.

Or, you could have left it on WIN 10, and had that same (so far) 1,460 days.

I may just pay the $30 a year for the extended W10 support on our "back-up" Dell Precision...which started life on W7. It was my Son's College box set up specifically with hardware and software for Engineering. I paid "way to much" for this very solid machine just to throw it away.

YMMV

Well, here is an alternative that at least look like W11 - wubuntu.org

Some benefits over traditional MS W11
  • Free of charge - but also have a Pro version.
  • Takes much less disk space than traditional W11.
  • Linux compatible (well, it IS Linux after all)
That said, I haven't tested that particular distro myself.

Hello,
I updated my big desktop PC to Windows 11 as many people, using Rufus and so on, but I'm now seeing that the security updates are not downloaded.
I mounted my PC in September 2017. It runs fine since about 7 years.

I know that Windows 10 will get updates until next October but I'm not super enthusiastic thinking about reinstalling Windows 10

Is it possible to get the security updates on a incompatible PC ? How? May be not.

I'm thinking about upgrading MOBO & CPU to compatible ones, but my hardware works just fine, so this would be a terrible waste. Not simple. It would cost me 230€. I'm not sure of what I want to decide.

I don't want to install an Ubuntu or a Mint OS. I know them and they are good systems but I'm not fond of them for my daily PC

Microsoft has made a terrible decision and hundred of millions of PC will may be go to waste. It's unbelievable. Let s hope they will f eventually decide to loose the rules allowing people to install a version of windows 11 in in October , facing the reality of waste and people who won t change their computers. Not impossible.
do you think it would be stupid to change MOBO & CPU for that purpose?
I actually have ordered, yesterday, the hardware, but I' m now hesitating.
I could may be continue using win 11 without the security updates for some time? I have a good security suite.
What do you think?
Thanks for your ideas.

I will install Linux instead of windows 11 if update is not available. Since Linux becomes more and more friendly, users will be easy to get used of it.

I did it (clean and legit pure fresh install of windows 11) but, I used an 22H2 usb, and got mine to update on it's own to 23h2... but so far it doesn't go further too 24h2 or newer on the old hardware, before that I used a registry fix from 10 to 11 but that ran out of service on 22h2, I don't think that works anymore... only method to windows 11 is to have supported hardware, anyway only then that you can expect things to work right as intended, I do second that these requirements to run an OS that is uptodate is un called for on any hardware, Isn't it up to the end user if they reap benefits an OS offers if they are hardware wise uptodate besides the software, well it should be, The way I remember computing is get it going not make it going!

The registry fixed pc always had issues, legit is the only way to be 100% problem free pc as long as what you're doing is supported.

I actually chose this nick name years ago in order to remember myself that I spend to much time seated in front of a computer

Okay, so, you know what ?
I switched to an SSD on which I installed Ubuntu as a B plan long time ago. I've done all the updates and also subscribed to" Ubuntu One", which is free.
Ubuntu works but WONDERFULLY !
I gave up the idea to upgrade CPU and MOBO, a 280€)! expensen whereas my PC is perfectly fine. No way.
I' m quite upset with Microsoft.

The negative side : I know by experience that I will probably occaionaly struggle with some problems and will have to spend quite some time searching on the web in some occasions on day, to resolve some little issues, but it s really worth
If you spent zero time learning theLinux terminal commands you will struggle at first, that s true. I did several years ago. you need to learn new things.

What restrictiosn will Microsoft put in place in the nexts years? May be very soon. I have lose confidence in them.

UBUNTU or another distribution. Mint is alsonice in my memory.
My desktop pc works as a rocket, faster than windows 11 !

One information : it' s actually possible to get the Windows11 updates on a pc on which the installtion was installed with Rufius etc. (ask to chatgpt ) But it s very complicated and the result can be very messy. I spend hours on this yesterday.
voila

Please don't do that.
Hello,
Yes, I copied a chatGPT answer, I believe you are right, there's something disturbing in that. Then I've just delete the post.
Furthermore I'm sad seeing seeing that there are less people exchanging in forums, Easy to understand why. I thinkwe all are asking to IAs and do' t share anything with other people. Sad indeed. on the other hand IA is incredibly useful efficient and fast to ger answers.
