How to Install Windows 98?

Hi
I want to install win98 on my computer. I'm working now with win7 and want also win98
The problem is i can't use startup disk because i dont have a floppy, and win98SE CD does not seem to be bootable cd (tried, not working)
I thought maybe i can access dos before win 7 starts, but i don't know how and if this is good solution...
Please help me!

Why do you need windows 98? Even if you were able to get it installed there are no drivers for your computer for windows 98.

If its an older program have you tried to run it in dos box? I have many older win 98 games that I play using dos box. Or try using win 7 32bit, I use lotus 123 ver 2.2 at work for a few things and it will load just fine on windows 7. you will be surprised at what win 7 32bit will install.


You can also run down to your local computer store and pick up a floppy to usb drive for like $5

If your build is fairly new (or heck, anything more recent that say 2005) you might not even be able to find drivers for the hardware that will work in Win 98SE.

I would look into finding an extra machine with windows 98 or 95 for legacy applications. I have computers as old as MS DOS 5.0 and WFW 3.11 and I can even get them on the web. Building and gaming on old PC's is quite a fun hobby

Wouldn´t it be just as possible to run those old DOS-games using e.g. DOSBOX or D-Fend Reloaded to emulate DOS instead of installing an entire old operating system? I have for example got "Master of Magic" to run on Windows XP SP3 with D-Fend Reloaded.

Yes, I also use DOSbox. However I prefer running old software on old PCs. I use dosbox on my main PC but when I want to sit and play a game like daggerfall for a while I'll use my Pentium 2 mmx windows 98 machine.

Out of curiosity I just took my old Windows 98SE CD from my shelf and tried to boot from it and it worked without problems.
So I guess you´re doing something wrong.
What comes first to my mind would be your BIOS settings.
Normally those have an entry like "boot order" where you can define where the computer should search for the operating system and normally for a fast boot-up the harddisk with the operating system is the first entry (so that no minute is wasted to first search for the operating system on a floppy drive, the CD-ROM and then on the harddisk like it was usual a decade ago).

So you could try to enter the BIOS when you start your PC, look for the boot order and if the first is the harddisk change the first entry to your CD-ROM drive. And THEN you restart the PC with the Windows 98SE CD in the drive and it should try to boot from that.
