Given it is put out by Micro$oft, i think there is no way to remove it.

You could try using older version of M$ 365 but it may not work, IF the Copilot was added with Win update.

2nd option is not to use M$ 365 at all. Instead, better to use open source office suite. LibreOffice is one. OpenOffice is another.
I've used Apache OpenOffice since WinXP days. Far better experience, especially since i don't have to put up with Micro$oft shenanigans. :)

3rd option is to put up with it and succumb to the will of Micro$oft.

its not pushy really, I will probably get used to pressing escape to ignore its suggestions.

I get 1tb of Onedrive space with the sub and its useful to me.
I also need office for many of the things I do. Its a way better choice than Google Docs.

I have used open office before.

Pretty sure its updated via windows update as I didn't do anything to get it, just showed up this morning. Could be it was set to open up on 1st November I guess.

looking at reliability history, it shows Office updated on 29th and licensing updated this morning.

It should be optional. I can see how corporations can turn it off via some Office Admin Panel but I don't believe individuals get it.

editing registry appears to be only way, Or run an older version.

Your privacy settings and Copilot

You can choose your privacy settings when you're using Microsoft 365 apps. Your ability to use Copilot features depends on these two settings:

  • Experiences that analyze content
  • All connected experiences

If you turn off either of those settings, you can’t use Copilot features in these apps:

  • Excel
  • OneNote
  • Outlook
  • PowerPoint
  • Word

Or just disable a setting - It doesn't seem to work but I see if windows needs a restart. I can't disable both of them as I need Onedrive.
