How to let ppl connect to my network w/o giving public IP?

Noob question from a networking noob - I want to set up a private Minecraft (yes, Minecraft) server for a few of my online friends where we can do whatever. However, I'm not particularly comfortable just giving out my IP (obvious reasons). Is there a way to let them connect to the server w/o giving my public IP?

I know of Hamachi, but that's a bit of a pain to get them all to connect to a network. I know about pointing a domain (example.com) at the IP, but they can just do 'ping example.com' and get the IP.

To connect to your network, they need to know the IP address. Or domain name, which will lead to the public IP address.
That's the way it works.

Fair enough... I figured that, but I wanted to see if there was a workaround I didn't know about.
