How to lower 4850's temp

My 4850 currently idles at 69c with the fan speed manually set to 50%, which is much hotter than what it should be based on what i've read.

What are some good ways to lower the temp?

Should i replace the thermal compound with arctic silver 5?

Should i add a 120mm case fan to the side of my antec 300?

Or should i replace the GPU fan altogether?

69C idle at 50% is too hot, I would try to set the heatsink again using better thermal paste, if you don't see better temps try an aftermarket HSF.

Before you go tearing that thing apart, what are the ambient room and case temperatures? I thought the 4800-series cards were supposed to downclock themselves at idle, reducing the core clock and voltage... I'm unsure if that would be controlled by the driver or the card's BIOS. What version of the Catalyst Driver Suite do you have installed?

Look at case temps and the airflow around this card. Seeing that it doesn't vent to the outside the heat can build up so you want to get it out faster.

My previous setup had a fan on a stick (Antec made I think) pointed over the card with an extractor fan below the card. That created a "fresh" airflow around the card. Nonetheless, don't be surprised at idle at max temps - just make sure that there's cool air getting to the gpu.

Ideally, air pulled in from the front bottom should provide this and then a extracting fan top rear should get rid of this (of the case).

My 4850 went from idling around 90c down to 35c, never goes above 50c

The Antec 300 is a good cooling case. You can help the airflow by adding a couple of 120mm intake fans in front.

The stock fans are adjustable. Do the temps drop if you set the fan speeds higher?

To test the benefits of improved case airflow, take off the side panel, and direct a house fan at the innards. If the vga temps drop significantly, the go the case cooling route.

If the house fan does not do much, then there is probably something wrong with the stock cooler.

If you can, rma it, or better, yet, return it in favor of a 4850 with a good dual slot cooler like one of these:
