How to make GW2 run smoothly?

I have a used Acer 5740G notebook (i5 430M, 4GB RAM, ATI HD 5650). Once I tried to play Guild Wars 2 from my friends account but it run kinda laggy. In theory the specs should be good enough to play it without problems, but even after format it was running odd.
The game is on sale now here www.g2a.com/weeklysale but I was wondering if could do something to make it run smoother? Not sure to get it or not... Any advices?

I play it also! Honestly it's a pretty demanding game on the account of being an MMORPG if nothing else, rendering people will give your computer nightmares.

my older laptop, an i7 and GT 550M configuration with 8GB of RAM, a good bit stronger than your laptop, could only handle the game at 1680x1050 resolution on low/medium settings.
what resolution do you play at? and what kind of settings do you use? Also, does your laptop play it fine at first, but slow down as the game goes on? That could be a sign of overheating
