How to make my GPU run smoother

Need help making my MSI GTX 640 run smoother/faster. Its only really used form HD films. Dont do much gaming if any. It tends to run a little `jerky' when played back over my Viera LCD via a HDMI connection. I tried changing the refresh rate from 50HZ to 60 or higher and doesn`t help. Have MSI afterburner but no clue as to what to tweak to help it run better. Any help would be appreciated.

What's your current power supply? I am going to suggest overclocking your card but in order to safely do so you much have a reasonably good quality power supply.

Not really. tried some YT tutorials but dont really get them. But I put this PC together so I`m reasonable tech savvy. So what can you suggest?

Try VLC player? Your card should have no issue with HD video playback.

Been using VLC for ages and never had a problem like this. . would uninstalling the GPU card and reinstalling help at all?

logic wise no, in the rarest of cases possibly.

Try running it using the Intel HD integrated graphics, see if that is any different? Both should have more than enough power to decode HD video.

Where are the video files located? on local disk on network storage? (NAS or other pc?) could be something else, not the GPU.

And to use the intel GPU how do I select that? Uninstall the GTX 640?

Plug the monitor into the dvi/hdmi on the motherboard. You might need to enable the IGPU in the bios with the GT640 still inside, otherwise just remove the GT640, and boot up with the screen attached to the mobo.

Yep. will give it a try. Thanks.....but one snag this `lag/jerkiness' with the HD film playback isn't noticeable on my small desktop monitor which I can only connect with the DVI socket. Its when I run it through HDMI to my Viera. So by going through the Intel processor via DVI is not going to tell anything...or is it? Hope that makes it a little clearer.

Are you sure you are running it at the correct resolution on the TV? If you set to the wrong one it will have to scale it (which could cause issues like this)

Hmm? I have the Viera set at 1080p 60HZ. 1920x 1080.

Just realized that the Intel GPU has also a HDMI so will give that a try tomorrow to see if there's any difference.

Just did a benchmark test with Heaven and I got 50% less in performance results than I did a few months ago.
FPS 6.2 12.6
Score 155/ 529
min FPS 2.4/8.5
max FPS 10.5/22.5

2nd column is older results from 6 months ago. why would I get a lower result the 2nd time around running the same stress tests? Still having jumpy video playback via GTX640/ HDMI. Still need help guys. thanks

Install Coretemp, check your CPU temperatures. CPU thermal throttling can cause these issues.

I did a benchmark test and it didnt seem to rise much above 50°C. So im guessing its within limits.

If more screenshots will help then let me know. still have a very jumpy graphics card/ would trying it in another PCI slot help? I believe its in PCI 3.0...but Im going to try swapping into another slot just as a test. Also need to take out the GPU card to try the Intel GPU and see if the problem persists. The problem is on both my screens and seems a tad less noticeable on WMP/ But I only ever use VLC/ Are there any settings I should check in VLC that might help this problem?
