How to move my routor and modem?

My wifi is currently set up in the basement and I want to move it to the middle of the house to get better connection. Thing is, I know nothing about connecting modems and such. The way it's set up right now the internet passes trough the downstairs computer that we never even use. I want to get rid of that computer without having to plug cables into my laptop but I have no idea how to do that. How do I go from wifi passing through a computer to having it set up on it's own at a different place in my house?

We'd need much more info on your setup.
1. What type of connection is this? Cable, DSL, fiber....?

2. We kind of need a drawing of where things are, and how you would like them to be. You're the only one with eyes on the situation.
