How to play .avi files windows media player

Hello,
how to play .avi format files on mediaplayer and all other formats such as mkv etc.. and which one is the best codec pack available for free download

also get vlc player which plays most of files without ant additional codecs

I had the same problem with Microsoft media player.

The VLC player fixed it!!

my windows media player can play some of my avi files but not others. now i have a clue about the reason, thank you
